home tour: laundry

confession:  our home may be much less perfect (and messier….and dirtier…..and more cluttered…) than it appears

In laying out our laundry room, we wanted a space that wasn’t a square footage hog, but that would be very usable.  And after doing laundry in a basement cellar for almost a year, plenty of natural light was a must.

The size seems just about right.  I have plenty of room on the long counter for all our 6 piles of clothes plus towel and misc, and I think even if our family wouldt grow by 1 or 2 someday there’d still be enough length for the added laundry.

The laundry hampers are from Steele Canvas, a little bit of a splurge, but I love love love them.  There’s a divider in each one creating two sides, so it’s easy breezy to sort the laundry.  (I currently do whites, lights, darks, jeans, exercise clothes – phew*, and towels)  When a side is almost full, it’s a full load of laundry.  If I really smoosh and squish, I can fit two loads of laundry in one side too.

The wood countertop needs sealed once a year.  It’s holding up good except for that one spot that I let a wet pot sit for way to long, but I’m guessing that could be lightly sanded out before I seal it again next time.

If I was going to change anything, I’d have the pull out drying racks a little deeper;  when I lay a really thick sweater on it, it won’t close.  I don’t iron much, so the pull out ironing board is fine for us.  If you’re an iron-a-holic, you’d probably find it a little small.   Also, we had outlets put in both closest, which is great for charging portable sweepers and such, but I wish we had also had a couple outlets put in the upper cabinets.  Not a big deal, but if I was doing it again, I would add those.
